Chantico AKA Hershey
Chantico is a beautiful chocolate Lab-mix who was found in Coquille in mid-July. The people who found her called the number on her tag which was Steamboat Animal Hospital in Centralia, Wash. The vet contacted the previous owner, who said he had given the dog to a lady from Oregon and didn’t have any information on her. We were contacted to help find the owner. When no one came forward after several weeks of ads in the paper and posters, we tried to find someone to adopt her because the people who were caring for her had three other large dogs and couldn’t afford to keep her any longer. On October 20, Friends of Coos County Animals let us bring Chantico to Pony Village Mall to join their animals that were up for adoption, after we paid to have her shots brought up to date. She was adopted that day by a couple that had lost their dog several months earlier. They changed her name to Hershey and are very happy to have her.
Penelope
Penelope is a darling little papillon who was found near the North Bend Umpqua Bank. Two days later, before her rescuers could find the owner, she escaped from their yard and was rescued again by someone else and taken to Edward Jones to see if they could locate the owner. We were called and picked her up to care for her until the owner could be found. We had her checked at Harbor Lights Animal Hospital for chips and put an ad in The World (they offer free ads for all lost pets), distributed posters, and called the Coos County Animal Shelter. A few days later Penelope’s owner called the Shelter and they gave her our number. We brought Penelope to her owner, after asking several questions to confirm that she was the true owner. It was a happy ending for both! The lesson in the story is that the phone number on her tag had not been updated and she didn’t have a chip, so it took five days to find her owner. Please keep your animals’ tags current and on a leash if not in a secure yard.
Sammy
Early in October we had a call from Florence from a couple that wanted to adopt a small dog because their Chihuahua/rat terrier had just passed away and their other dog, Misty, was very lonesome. Four days later we had a call from someone in Lakeside needing to find a home for a male schnauzer-mix. We put them together, and the Florence couple went to see the schnauzer-mix. They thought he was so cute and would fit in with Misty so they took him home. Sammy will be neutered soon and he is thriving with all the loving care they have given him. They think he is part basset hound because of his “bay,” long body, long tail, and short legs. Misty loves him and they play and sleep together, so it was a wonderful match.
Max
Max is a seven-year-old St. Bernard who was adopted by a loving family that has two other St. Bernards, plus three other big dogs -- all rescued, too! They have several acres for them to romp around in, but all the dogs prefer to be inside by the fire. Max has gained weight and fits right in with the whole family and loves to be a “lap” pooch. This is such a change from being left outside and with very little attention for the past few years when his previous owner was ill.
Midas
Midas is a two-year-old Newfoundland who was left “homeless” with Max when their owner passed away. She was adopted within two days by a family that had been searching for the “right” addition to their family for a long time. Midas has a few health issues, but they are making sure that she has the best of care, and after she was groomed you would never know it was the same girl.
Scooby-Doo
Scooby-Doo is a seven-year-old Shar-Pei who lost his owner. We took him to Eugene to join another rescued Shar-Pei who was being transported to Portland by a Lane County Animal Control officer. From there, both dogs were taken by a K-9 rescue group from Mercer Island, WA. In less than a month, Scooby-Doo was adopted by a couple that had adopted another senior citizen Shar-Pei in the spring from the group, so it made a perfect match.
Harley
One of our volunteers mentioned Harley, a young Golden Retriever needing a new home, to another of our volunteers, who works with the “Golden Bond” rescue group. She had been working with a couple who had been looking for a “Golden” forever. They adopted Harley before Christmas and thought that this was the best gift they had had ever received.
Hannah
Hannah is a 10-month-old Wirehaired Terrier who needed a new home because her owner was ill. A couple stopped by our “Santa Paws” event in November looking for a new dog because theirs had passed away. They live in a RV and are hosts at various RV Parks throughout the western states, and wanted a small dog. They fell in loved with Hannah immediately. They said she is the most perfect dog they have ever had, and don’t know what they would do without her.
Oscar
Oscar, a nine-month-old cat, had been rescued and his owners had given him his shots and had him neutered, but since he didn’t get along with the three other cats in the home, they were searching for another placement for him. We found a new home for Oscar in April 2007, and though the new owners loved him, the husband was allergic to him, and another home was needed for Oscar. In December we were in contact with a couple that wanted a kitten, but Oscar was so sweet they decided to adopt him, so Oscar has finally found his permanent home.
Gina, Pete, and Minnie
Gina is a three-year-old Doxie who still lived with her four-year-old mommy, Sheila. Sheila had just given birth to three pure Doxie puppies, and all five needed to find new homes. A family that we sent to see them was interested in Gina, then also fell in love with one of the puppies, so they adopted her and little Pete, age seven weeks. Another of the puppies was adopted by a family we sent, and they named her Minnie. The foster parents were able to find a good home for Sheila and the third puppy, so all have wonderful new homes now.
Sidney
We received a call from the Women’s Safety & Resource Center desperately looking for a temporary home for a one-year-old Shepard-mix until the owner and her son could find a new home. We were able to place her with one of our longtime volunteers who has done fostering on her own for many years. Sidney, who proved to be quite a handful, was there for three weeks, and we appreciate all the love and care our volunteer gave her and the family.
Tucker
Tucker is a nine-month-old Yellow Lab whose owner had a stroke and had to move where he could no longer keep the dog. One of our volunteers wanted to foster him so he wouldn’t have to be taken to a shelter. She had the active, lively dog for six days, then found a family that wanted a good watchdog and a playmate for their two sons. They adopted Tucker and he is now home with his new family.
